A kid won the System1!

Probably be on Ebay by the end of the week
smiley36.gif

reckon that will be the case, big old machine to find room for...

Would be nice if this happens for the winner to donate at least some of the proceeds to the charity though, will have to see what happens.

You never know, it might go to a home where they love it and the kid becomes one of a new generation of collectors!

......... phew............

What an awesome weekend! Very stressed Friday afternoon/evening and a bit on Saturday morning but lots to laugh about looking back. Amazing event, great turnout, great to talk to loads of members and make some new friends.

Best comedy moment for us was TRON.......

Anyone who's into arcade collecting etc knows that games like Star Wars, GORF, TRON, Pole Position, Asteroids etc can be some of the most flaky games on the planet to get working let alone run for 2 days straight right.

We'd burn tested every cab that was coming for the last 2 weeks before carefully packing down cables and loading onto the truck (that blocked the road outside the unit btw).

We started to fire things up Saturday morning and got to TRON which wouldn't start up. Dammit!!!!!

DaveO stuck his head around the back and kindly offered me some out of order flyers and then said what's up? So he started to look into the cab and found that the switcher was getting power and giving out +5, +12 etc as should and was going to the MCR adaptor board and getting nowhere else...

So we left it for the day.

Come to 6pm and the public gets chucked out and we're itching to take screwdrivers, soldering irons etc to the thing to get it going.

Dave proceeds to check parts, trace wiring etc and we can't figure out whats wrong...

I say, "when I popped the cables out, one had got twisted around some other wires in transit so it could be i've dislodged a feed or something".... more toiling over power brick.

Eventually we turn our attention to why the monitor isn't coming on either and then Dave says, what about the lights etc - well, nothing at all is working.

I stand up to scour the back light behind the monitor and without really looking for it notice the dust on the top of the machine and an obscure looking indentation....

Have you guessed what was wrong at this point.....?

The obscure indentation - when I stood on tips of my toes turns out to be "the secret ON button".

Me: "Dave, I think I might know what the problem is"

Dave: "Whats that?"

..... click .....

TRON lives!

A good giggle later and we're happy its working but gutted for the visitors on Saturday who didn't get the chance.

So the moral of the story is..... you need someone Oliver's height to spot hidden switches on cabs on your crew!

That or get your base technician not to turn them off like that (we just throw the isolator switches generally).

Much love was given to the game on day 2 for sure.

Hehehe. Hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the event. My Mrs wants an Austin Powers pinball now but only if it comes with all the tent and lights and music.

Andy has taken tons of pictures and I noticed a few of the "lesser seen James playing a game" shots (maybe that's a competition in future - count how many games I actually get to play at an event lol).

I've shot video which had guest commentators, it'll emerge later this week, i've to go back to day job land now for a few days.

To slam 2015!!!!

Easy mistake to make James lol
I've done it in my cocktails with the switch being underneath .
It's so much easier to know the game is switched off at the plug where you can see it's switched off .
Oh well good turn out of cabs and Tron is so iconic for that era it was great it made the appearance.
Well done for bringing what you did mate it must have been very stressful

I had a fantastic time at this years Slam. It was an absolute pleasure to take a couple of cabs and meet a few of the forum members. Much respect to all those involved!!!!
Highlights for me were playing a 2 player game of Robotron with Jeff Minter, having a bash on loads of pinball and standing in the middle with my eyes closed. I was ten years old again!!! Awesome...

I've also just plugged my Galaxian back in, which has a HSS kit installed and noticed there's a new high score!!!
Initials are ADS. Any takers??

Tron...indeed, doh. I just cannot stand by whilst it is not working as just an awesome game and my favourite one too!

We have all made mistakes, and over time cabs get re-wired and hacked-up, so anything is possible.
Better of course to have the on/off button to actually turn a cab on/off. :)
-Seen so many dangerous cabs at the mains wiring point.
-Any damaged mains cable should be repaired or replaced, especially those crappy twin cable ones, which get easily torn once a cab grinds them....

There was a power-cut caused by a cab, maybe Astron Belt (big thx to KDoe for bringing along this v rare beauty). Knocked out a whole 2 rows - awesome! :)

Great weekend, looking forward to the August Rival one now!! :)

Nope, the Astron Belt was fine apart from a monitor fault on Friday and an interlock switch drop out Sat morning.

It was my Mad Planets, the mains cable on that is new and correctly fused but from what I can tell the primary winding on the transformer decided to short itself out after 31 years of usage so that's why sadly it had to stay off all weekend and the power brick ended up in the boot of the car. If anyone has a Gottlieb power brick now would be the time to mention it before I hack an SMPSU in there and rub my head briefly on where to get -12v for the DAC supply from and of course the stupid +30v for the amp, which I shall probably end up removing and putting a more normal amp in that requires +12v or something.....

I figure if possible for future events it might be an idea to cable the show on additional feeds so a power issue only knocks out half a row of cabs but the logistics of which may be more complicated than I imagine. However there's little more mortifying than seeing the faces of 40+ upset gamers as I emerged from the back of the cab to see two rows had gone off :)

Not sure what to make of the Delorean? .....mental motor!

The event was a real eye opener. I had my fat head inside some of the pins when they were being worked on and found that all pretty damned cool inside there, a lot going on under those playfields and something I need to learn about and really need some of that Pinball action!

Thanks for sharing Rich

<edit - note to self, stop chatting next time and take some pictures>

Until Ol gets his a** in gear and posts his pics/vids here's my little walk around of the cabs at the Slam. The vid was taken on the Sunday just before 6pm so the lights had come on and the teardown was already starting.

I had a great time all weekend, the highlight for me was definitely smarty's Fire Truck, closely followed by Ol's Lunar Lander (even though it was only working for what seemed like 10 mins!). Fire Truck was just soooo nicely restored and to see so many people enjoying a 36 year old black and white game was really nice to see. Was a pleasure to meet you smarty, thanks for bringing your Fire Truck (and your Hang-On and Centipede cabaret too!)

I did manage to get high scores on the usual suspects, Pole Position, Super Hang-On and Hang-On but could only manage 2nd highest on Frogger and Out Run. Gutted!
