According to reports, pre-orders for the PS4 are approximately double than that of the XBO.

That surprises me, although I do have a launch day PS4 coming next week, for the kids mind.

I can't play all this COD and chips nonsense.

I'm trying to remember the speccy vs c64 at school - was it 48k Vs 64k? this all seems very familiar.

I am really naffed off in that I now have to open my PS4 next week to check its not one of the faulty batch rather than wait until Christmas day as planned. I also just can't bring myself to spend £430 on an XBOne this Friday (plus another £45 for a game) for 720p upscaled gaming, glitchy UI / voice support and sub-60fps framerates; Forza 5 was going to make it all worthwhile but even as stunning as the game looks, it appears to have been cut-back feature-wise a lot from Forza 4.

I think both consoles launched 6 months too early...although it's debatable whether a delay would have helped the hardware manufacturing faults the PS4 is allegedly experiencing

That sounds like a fairly weak excuse to open it and play it to be honest. Leave it shut and just make sure you have a backup plan for a Xmas present

So, Xbone buyers, I hear you've bought a cheap Windows 8 machine with half the features missing...

I've been reading pages upon pages of XO and PS4 comparisons and I think it's just safe to buy both

PS4 has the better GPU, but from what I have read the 18CU's against the 12 in the XO is big - but not as big as I think some sites are making out. From what i've read there's bottlenecks on the CPU when going over 14CU's on the PS4 - still even if the extra 4 only provide diminishing returns - it's returns all the same.

The XO has the better CPU and an extra 15 specialised cores for other tasks, and probably over the lifetime of the console the better UI, software (not games), and integration into other services.

In regards to the ram, some sites are saying the XO actually has the better bandwidth (although fiddly to develop for) with the ESRAM over the PS4, whilst the other half say the opposite. Both sides appear to say that the DDR3 latency in the XO is better for the CPU tasks than the GDDR5 in the PS4 for its CPU tasks.

Only time will tell - if you like your consoles games I imagine like me, there's exclusives on both sides that you will want to play - so get both

I think they'll both end up great machines.

This is the first (major) console launch where I haven't been there on the doorstep cash in hand, both machines are atm underwhelming with no software of meritable mention at release or worthwhile console exclusives, out of the 2 the PS4 is the one I would pick, the fact it is designed to play games and not be a media center is a massive plus for me (spesh one just aimed at Merkins for now), I spose it doesn't help I have an i7@4.5ghz and a GTX 680 PC that they can't possible hope to match in power and feature set isn't helping.

Im not a modern console person really, but think its mad that such big companies produce such big products with millions in R&D and they both seem to be a bit knackered in different ways. And despite people moaning they still buy them?

I'll stick with my megadrive and snes that both worked out the box and still do 20 odd years later!
