There's a major difference between something that is wanted versus abandoned dude. I think you're getting your knickers in a twist over a clear misclassification on your behalf.
It's hanging off the back of a wagon, come winter it's f**ked once it rains and snows and the thing is a soggy mess. The cars are fine in that situation. To add another angle the kids are going to f**k it all up soon anyway from the sounds of it. You're saving it not stealing it.

If I was closer and could be arsed, I would take it. I'd even leave a little note in the event that the machine was wanted with my contact details in a waterproof jacket on the inside of the wagon.
At the end of the day, as previously said, come October'ish, I can almost guarantee it will be a soggy mess and no owner will ever turn up. If it hasn't already been vandalised.
If someone is trying to legitimately contact the owner - then they should say to stop the prospectors.
