That monitor looks brand new! I've been reading a few things about the Nintendo monitors having water soluble aquadag on them. Yours looks really clean, I take it yours didn't have the water soluble stuff on it?

I've read this also and I'm yet to come across this problem. I'm pretty thorough but I don't saturate the tube, it's more of a wipe over than a wash.

This guy washed the aquadag off his Sanyo EZ tube

Although it was rectified by repainting the aquadag back on.

That video scares me to death when he's spraying the monitor with a garden hose. Looks really satisfying though! What does that aquadag stuff do?

I think it's used to help prevent the build up of static Tony to filter the high voltage? If it isn't there it causes the tube to Arc

That's a great vid Al
Washing the monitor with a hose does seem to go against the grain but he has shown it works perfectly.
Very well documented

Spent some time on the monitor yesterday

Fitted the chassis

As Popeye is in the ' cab clinic ' I tested the monitor on a DK which is sat patiently awaiting it's resto

Really pleased with the picture - crispy crunch!

Anyhow, the B+ voltage was slightly high (should be 108VDC)

After a slight tweak

Job done!

Did you wash your monitor with a hose then ?
Looks like you've painted it with aquadag too

Nah, don't fancy that idea much Alex although I'd like too it's just a bit too dodgy.

It's just wiped over with a damp sponge and dried with clean, dry rags although Mr Sheen did make a brief appearance

Come next summer I'm going to get the hose out on a monitor I reckon!

Give it a go Tony. I'll pass though simply because the results achieved on the last two are good although it probably takes longer, It's a safe method.

A pic of Nintendo's attempt to try and Beef up the base of the cab. Not seen this before, using cut offs from other cabs in the making but perfect if looking for a Mario/DK Junior paint match!!

Also cleaned up my last Sanyo monitor at the weekend for Donkey Kong, just need to rebuild the chassis etc

Inspirational stuff on the monitors. I have a monitor 'restore' planned for next month, so good to see a nice high benchmark to aim for!

Cheers James. Quite enjoy working on monitors and it's quite rewarding when you get a nice clear, steady picture at the end and for a small amount of effort. Keep us posted on your monitor job!

I've never known dust like the stuff found on monitors. The black sh*t gets everywhere!!!

Small update, really don't have the time to do a detailed, worded resto on this one.

Been working on this for 4/5 days on and off. The cabinet is prepped for spraying, the inside is painted, back door is finished. Literally just sprayed a primer test patch on the cab to make sure it doesn't have any reaction for the following reason. This cabinet is actually painted from the factory and is the first Nintendo I've restored that has had this finish as they're normally Formica, possibly cost cutting who knows? There were a few give aways, firstly there was no hot plastic smell when I was sanding the surfaces that I've got so familiar with over the years. The second give away was the reverse side of the speaker vent, blue overspray pictured below and the third give away, when I pulled the side art off the right hand side...it took a bloody great load of paint with it!!

I'll update when it's sprayed

Cheers, Al

Ha yeah

....the mask is a permanent thing, It doesn't come off just in case a resto bowls up and I'm trying to avoid having Nintendo blue lungs!
