I think at the end of the day, you pretty much have to work on the basis that any cab leant to any event could come back damaged and / or non working. I think to consider it any other way is doing yourself an injustice and could only lead to heartache.

Now, obviously that's a major generalisation, and should be taken as no more than that. Obviously different organisers of different shows can implement different policies as they see fit.

For instance when my Star Wars pin went to our Star Wars conventions year in year out, it was manned pretty much at all times. Or it wouldn't have been there. Not hawkeyed like a bouncer, just someone around to keep half an eye on it. Because of that, it only ever suffered the general wear and tear of getting there and back each year.

I went for the first time last year and it seemed to me that the drinks area was very separate to the main play area, i certainly wouldn't have felt comfortable taking a drink into the main area as it seemed no-one else was (although clearly a few people did), so i guess its not really like a 'pub' environment, personally i would be more concerned with people kicking the hell out of machines when they die...

You could try, but you'd fail. It's a gaming event, not a beauty contest. Machines don't really get abused or damaged anyway, but trying to stop people wandering around with a beer that they bought from 20 feet away doesn't work.

Similarly, it doesn't matter how many signs we put up saying "no hogging machines" there are still people that do it, it's just the way people are.

I can certainly stop people from drinking near the machines if signs are up. Just have to politely instruct rather then give them the impression there's a choice

Sounds good enough to me. At last year's Eurocade I had to pick up one empty beer bottle from the game area and that was probably from one of the people of the band instead of one of the collectors/registered visitors.

I do accept the risk of the machine dying during the day, at Eurocade 3 of my machines crashed, 2 of them work perfectly again now it was extremely hot that day and those machines hadn't been doing hours like they did before (Ms.Pac, Centi and Galaxian).

The SW cockpit played without a single problem throughout the day, I was very happy about that.

The only thing that got damaged was the eagle topper on my JD pinball (which I sold later) but that was my own stupid mistake. It was already broken,when I bought it, I re-glued it so I should have taken it off during transport.

I think those machines are meant to be played on and I love when I can bring one (or more) cabs to an event to share it with others.

I've been to a lot of meetings and it's pretty simple, where there are only collectors you don't see drinks near cabs, where there is "general public" you will see drinks everywhere...

But from what most of guys read, I'm happy enough...

So....is anyone bringing an Asteroids ?

I wish I could come, unfortunately I am at a charity event on the 14th and I am taking my cabs. Hopefully will meet all you guys soon.

I've been both to both previous SCS events and to many other pin shows in the past 3-4 years and, yes, people do walk about with beers. At the Daventry pin show the bar is literally in the same room as the pins so it's really not something you could realistically police even if there was a "no drinks" policy (which there isn't - or not that I'm aware of). I've never seen any pin/cab damaging spills but of course it's always possibility I suppose. At the end of the day, if a particular cab is super precious and you're worried then don't take it. This isn't some pub on a Friday night though, it's just middle aged men wandering about playing pinball. IMO you should be more worried about the controls getting a pounding than anyone spilling a drink as you could have hardcore players using your cabs solidly for two days.

I often carry a beer around with me at these events, it sits tucked away under the pin whilst playing and obviously never goes on a cab. Don't see anything wrong with that.

Personally I wouldn't worry about pins or about upright cabs unless they have a conveniently flat "beer shelf" on top. However I would definitely have reservations about taking a cocktail cab unless I completely accepted that, at the end of the day, it is a table shaped object and somebody will probably put their beer on it. Collectors wouldn't, and that'll be a lot of the the people there, but random punters might.

Wish the slam would have been planned in another weekend. Is it a special weekend or something ?

I can't get the one day/overnight saver tickets on the Eurotunnel for that weekend, nor does my discount from the Dutch AA work on that weekend...

Thing it that this almost doubles the fare on "accessible" times....

Can get cheaper tickets on ferries, but 1.5 hrs. crossing time is not what we want at a short weekend stay like this...

Just a question, is Rav planning any events this year ? Might be an idea to come then...?

Its the school holidays in the UK so thats probably why the price is higher...

Regarding the crossing by ferry, you are talking 90minutes against 45 on the tunnel so not too bad surely, and at least on the ferry you can have a bite to eat which saves a stop this side...
