That's right, I've now updated the installer with some new logic which should take into account someone wanting to use an LCD screen without using the AMD drivers, feel free to download the new image or the update package to give it a try.

Was about to whinge about staying up till midnight trying to sort my sound but I can see you were up a fair bit later working on this which puts things in to perspective.

Just about to order a couple of 6450s which will hopefully make things go a bit smoother re my audio but would still like to get it working in the meantime, so I'll keep fiddling. Will also be good to have these cards in place for when I get around to building some new cabs to house my TVs

New Image works a treat.

My sound even seems to have corrected itself the only thing I did differently was being connected by HDMI during the install. I didn't do this before as the boot options only display via VGA no matter what settings I select in the bios, I just got around this by waiting a bit then hitting down and enter on the blank boot screen.

Audio still doesn't work via HDMI in Attract Mode/ Groovy MAME (but does in Windows) but not a problem as I now get perfect sound via the audio jack!

If anyone can advise on the HDMI audio issue that would be great but not essential, I can live with it the way it is since only one of my cabs uses HDMI anyway.

I made a complete mess of my Vertical build, so I did a complete restart yesterday. This is the first time I have used your build, so I was unaware there was a wizard, so I just made my way through myself with everything I needed already downloaded for me, which was nice.

I have always used Gameex as my front end of choice, but this build is Attract Mode centric, so I have run with that, even though as a front end, its a bit "busy" for me, but I am sure I will get used to it, or find a very minimalist theme I can use. Vic assures me there is one. Also it's not showing clones, which I believe may be because I am using a merged romset (which Gameex handles ok).

The read only bit was simple to do, and everything seems now to be working.

Great work, even though I seemingly didn't use it to its full potential.

Arghhh the Wobbly sound came back!

Installed on another machine and that also has wobbly sound, can't figure out what's going on.

Has anyone else got this problem or had it in the past? I've never had any problems with audio on MAME

Vic had problem audio in DonkeyKong Jr and some others, and he fixed it by changing the video mode from d3d to auto.
It can also happen if your pc isnt up to running the game at 100% and its frameskipping.

I had a problem with sound a while back that was pervasive across two machines, and I eventually found it was the driver version I was using. If you've tried everything else, try changing the driver from Crimson to Catalyst.

Thanks had a good read although didn't understand half of it but I do know that I'm using the Catalyst driver as I installed it manually since I'm using the LCD option.

Any idea on the port audio settings?

Try Crimson then The way you've described it (inc the 5450) is exactly the problem I had - are you using the same card in multiple computers?

You could also try not using super resolutions (if you are). Calamity has stated problems occurring with some 5450s and super resolutions.

Portaudio will just work or have sound that crackles/breaks up, it shouldn't cause wobbly sound.cools2020-05-26 15:53:58

Yep same card multiple machines, might try some other cards got a box of older ATI ones but the 5450 is the newest is it worth a try?

Please could you point me in the direction of the crimson driver?

Thanks Cools, have downloaded and I'm just about to try via another clean install.

Should I mention that I don't want to install 15Khz I'm using an LCD?

I'm using Chunksins Image as I like the the wizard and the write protect/ and instant sheller all combined in a neat package.

If it is the same issue I had it was the driver itself causing the problem, entirely random across any game I tried any time I tried.

Unfortunately the CRT Emu driver in your link didn't work nor does the crimson driver from the AMD site.

Been at this for 2 days solid and it's starting to get irksome now

What did work putting a 4530 in, it worked flawlessly. The problem is when I switched on HLSL every game ran about 5fps. Not sure if the 5450 can handle HLSL but probably not.

What are my best options here for getting this up and running.

Maybe I'll try the 4530 driver on the 5450? I've also got a brand new 5450 so might give that ago in case there is some sort of hardware fault?

Will I have any trouble with GM if I just use something like a NVidia GTX 750?

If youre using an lcd then use a decent modernish GPU tbh, HLSL requires proper grunt. That nvidia will be good. The low spec AMD are for CRT 15khz guff

Now running the GTX 750 on my main cab with HLSL the RR 2 music drops a bit when there's a lot going on but other than that its fine and looks really good.

My other two cabs just have 19 inch 5:4 screens and I can just add SLGs when I find them. Now running on a 5450 and a 4550 without issues. I think the 5450 I've had problems with for the pass two days could possibly have a fault as the new one which is identical hasn't given me any wobbly sound yet! If it does I can just switch for a 4550 as I've got another 5 spare!

I hestitated replying with this last night as it's been a long time since I've done it and I'm not sure on the current method, but it should be perfectly possible to get MAME to apply scanlines by itself on those LCDs.

You can even go one step further and do stuff like this, which I think I wrote before HLSL existed...

The built in HLSL settings are very heavy. You can switch various bits off and gain a heck of a lot more speed - I think scanlines alone should be manageable on the cheapo AMD (set shadowmask to 0, distortion to 0, bloom to 0 etc) (I think bloom is the heaviest bit)

I think it's been said, but I can verify too - you just need an ATI videocard for CRTs, if you're using an LCD, the GTX cards give noticably better performance, and they're quite cheap too.
The GTX 750 should play all MAME stuff without a glitch, as well as Demul, Teknoparrot and other latest emulators, as long as your CPU is decent too.
